Cyanotype with Angela Chalmers - 2 day course - Sat 18th & Sun 19th or Mon 20th & Tues 21st July 2026

Cyanotype with Angela Chalmers - 2 day course - Sat 18th & Sun 19th or Mon 20th & Tues 21st July 2026

Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th July 2026

or Monday 20th & Tuesday 21st July 2026

10am-4pm (both days)

Join Angela Chalmers for a two-day cyanotype printing workshop. The first day is an introductory overview of one of the earliest photographic techniques from the 19th century. This engaging workshop will teach you all the essentials, including chemical mixing, hand-coating paper with brushes, correct exposures and the final development. Using ultraviolet lamps, you will create cyanotype photograms from three-dimensional objects, such as flowers, leaves, feathers, or lace. You will learn how to enhance cyanotypes through double exposure techniques and the skilful layering of hand-drawn images and text using acetate.

On the second day, you will discover the exciting possibilities of manipulating the traditional cyanotype method. You will have the opportunity to incorporate secondary colours using watercolours, pigment powders, and marker pens. Additionally, you can experiment with modifying the blues using bleach and toning them with tea and botanical tannin to create beautiful sepia images reminiscent of the pioneers of photography.

Both days suit complete beginners and those with some experience who would like to experiment with the process. You will gain knowledge to continue making cyanotypes at home and take home a beautiful set of cyanotype prints.

Angela is the author of Creative Cyanotype. Angela studied Fine Art at the University of Hull (BA Hons) First Class. Her cyanotypes were published in Cyanotype Toning: Using Botanicals to Tone Blueprints Naturally (2021) as part of the Routledge series on Contemporary Practices in Alternative Process Photography. Angela has contributed articles for Amateur Photographer and On Landscape. Her work has been exhibited internationally and included in private collections worldwide. She is the artist-in-residence at St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough. Read more about Angela on her website.

All our workshops take place at our Handprinted Studio, 22 Arun Business Park, Shripney Road, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO22 9SX.

Please choose either Saturday/Sunday or Monday/Tuesday.
